Is pattern mode a full regular expression?
Yes, JavaScript regular expressions. In pattern mode $1 and $& in the replacement refer to groups. An invalid pattern shows an error and changes nothing.
Does literal mode treat dots and brackets as text?
Yes. In literal mode every character is matched as typed, and $ in the replacement is plain text.
