41 / 280

Left: 239
Glyphs: 69
Links (23 each): 1
UTF-16 units: 70

X weights the text: a link that starts with http://, https:// or www. counts as 23 even when it is shorter, and most emoji and CJK characters count as 2. A bare domain such as example.com is counted here as plain text (X may still treat it as a link), and a link glued to a word, like foohttps://…, is not a link. Attached media is not counted. Premium only raises the cap; the weighting is the same.

Frequently asked questions

Why is an X link always 23?

X wraps a link and charges 23 characters whether the address is short or long. Shortening it yourself does not save room. A standard post is 280 weighted characters; Premium can be longer.

Why does an emoji count differently on each platform?

X weights most emoji as 2. Instagram counts what you see, so one emoji is 1. TikTok's API counts UTF-16 units, and many emoji take 2.
